People St. – pre-permitted public improvements in Los Angeles

People Street

This is a good example of:

cutting red tape for small tactical projects such as plazas, parklets and bike corrals.

Summary:

People St is a one-stop shop for information, resources, and materials to construct plazas, parklets, and bicycle corrals. People St. streamlines the process installing these three types of projects in Los Angeles neighborhoods. People St. represents one of the many tools in Los Angeles’  Great Streets toolbox

Narrative:

People St offers an application-based process (available at certain times each year)for community partners to receive approval to install a plaza, parklet, or bicycle corral. Through peoplest.lacity.org, potential Community Partners can access an online-application portal and the materials required for the application process.

Using proposal criteria, LADOT selects a limited number of applications to move forward. Considerations for proposal selection include: organizational capacity, site location, site context, community support, and access needs for public spaces. Those selected then work closely with LADOT to complete the process of bringing a project to life.People St map

Each  project type comes with a pre-approved Kit of Parts that contains required configurations and specifications. These specifications simplify the process to ease design and avoid lengthy project review.

In 2013, the city recruited volunteers to study the performance of projects, including pedestrian counts and street surveys. In 2015, the city added a map to show the location of projects and their surroundings.

  1. This is a very smart way to sustain a community based public space Programme.
