Rackspotter – Crowdsourced Bike Rack Mapping

This is a good example of:

using the bicycle community to map the location and condition of bicycle racks

Summary:

Arlington County’s Bicycle Program created Rackspotter, an app to identify and map bicycle parking racks.  BikeArlington builds on existing partnerships among citizens, businesses and local government to encourage more people to bike more often in Arlington.

Narrative:

Arlington VA has one of the most advanced bicycle programs in the United States.  Most new development projects must install commuter bicycle parking as part of development approvals.  Public bike racks, mostly installed along sidewalks, are largely installed where possible, or according to public requests. Before Rackspotter, the County did not have a comprehensive map of bicycle racks locations.

Rackspotter fills this need by letting users:

  • Take photos using smart phones, uploading a photo and location.  The location appears on a map.
  • Use the application to locate a rack close to their destination.
